How Casual Conversations Can Lead to Big Savings
I've always found that working as a subordinate, it was easy to uncover challenges that your fellow co-workers had. I’d find them just by chatting with them - usually waiting for a meeting or going out for social events.
For example, one engineer I was working with was spending a lot of his day designing the blanking interval for the horizontal casing string in his SAGD wellbore.
After the producer SAGD well was drilled, you'd want to blank out certain intervals based on a specific threshold of resistivity readings from the logging tool. In this instance, he just did it by reading off the logs and picking the measured depths. If resistivity was over X amount for Y meters, blank it.
I told him, listen, I could Kaperize that for you.
It always worked for people that “typed with their thumbs”.. if you know what I mean.
He gave me the data, in my “spare” time, I built an Excel spreadsheet, and it outpu a schematic and a tally sheet for which intervals needed to be blanked.
